Industrial IoT projects often use the words modem, M2M router, industrial router, gateway, switch, DTU, and RTU in the same architecture diagram. They are not interchangeable labels, but they are not universal product categories either. One device may combine a cellular modem, IP routing, VPN, serial interfaces, and protocol handling; another may provide only a cellular connection to a host computer.
