5G RedCap (Reduced Capability) is a 3GPP Release 17 standard purpose-built for industrial IoT and M2M applications. Unlike full 5G NR — designed for high-bandwidth consumer use cases — RedCap delivers the core benefits of 5G at significantly lower module cost and power consumption. With downlink speeds up to 150 Mbps and latency under 20ms, RedCap sits in the connectivity sweet spot between LTE Cat 4 and full 5G NR, making it the right choice for the next generation of industrial deployments.

How does 5G RedCap work?

5G RedCap simplifies the 5G NR radio profile — using narrower channel bandwidth (up to 20 MHz), a reduced antenna configuration, and 5G Standalone (SA) architecture — to deliver essential 5G features without the hardware complexity of full eMBB-grade 5G.
