5G RedCap (Reduced Capability) is a 3GPP Release 17 standard purpose-built for industrial IoT and M2M applications. Unlike full 5G NR — designed for high-bandwidth consumer use cases — RedCap delivers the core benefits of 5G at significantly lower module cost and power consumption. With downlink speeds up to 150 Mbps and latency under 20ms, RedCap sits in the connectivity sweet spot between LTE Cat 4 and full 5G NR, making it the right choice for the next generation of industrial deployments.

How does 5G RedCap work?

5G RedCap simplifies the 5G NR radio profile — using narrower channel bandwidth (up to 20 MHz), a reduced antenna configuration, and 5G Standalone (SA) architecture — to deliver essential 5G features without the hardware complexity of full eMBB-grade 5G. This makes RedCap modules smaller, cheaper, and more power-efficient, while retaining native 5G network access, low latency, and network slicing support.

What is the difference between 5G RedCap, LTE Cat 4 and full 5G?

5G RedCap is a reduced-capability 5G technology defined in 3GPP Release 17 for devices that do not need the bandwidth of full 5G. LTE Cat 4 uses 4G networks, while these RedCap routers use compatible 5G SA networks and also support 4G LTE. Choose according to local network availability, required throughput and device interfaces; actual speed and latency depend on the deployment.

Will these 5G RedCap routers work with my mobile operator?

WR153, WR254 and WR255 require an operator that supports RedCap on a compatible 5G SA network. Check the regional model's frequency bands, operator support, SIM service and coverage before deployment. A general 5G coverage claim does not by itself confirm RedCap compatibility.

Can WR153, WR254 and WR255 use 4G LTE when RedCap is unavailable?

Yes. All three models support 4G LTE as well as 5G RedCap. LTE access depends on the model's supported bands, the operator and the SIM service. Test network switching at the installation site; active connections may need to reconnect.

How do I choose between WR153, WR254 and WR255?

Choose WR153 for two Ethernet ports and an RS232 or RS485 serial option. WR254 provides four Ethernet ports and 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi. Choose WR255 when you also need separate RS232 and RS485 ports and additional I/O. Confirm the exact regional variant and interfaces against its specification.

Which VPN and industrial protocols do the RedCap routers support?
