Overview
Wavetel has partnered with an IoT system integrator in China on a solution built on the Wavetel WR565 4G LTE industrial router. The router uploads in-store sales and inventory data in real time to a cloud platform for centralized processing, enabling intelligent management of inventory counting, out-of-stock replenishment, and anti-theft alarms.
Challenges
On-site devices come from different vendors and use different communication protocols, resulting in poor interoperability that makes unified access difficult.
The traditional single-broadband model carries extremely high risk: a carrier line failure or fiber maintenance can bring the entire store's checkout operations to a standstill.
Stores have no dedicated network engineer. When a device goes offline, headquarters only learns of it through reports from store staff and must then dispatch personnel for on-site troubleshooting, resulting in a long fault-resolution cycle.
Sales data and customer information are sensitive, and transmitting them over the public network carries the risk of theft or tampering.
In the traditional model, store checkout and other devices share a single link, so traffic competes for bandwidth; during peak hours this can cause POS payment latency and degrade the customer experience.
Solution
The WR565 provides multiple Ethernet ports and RS485/RS232 serial ports, delivering strong device connectivity and simplifying deployment. The checkout system and NVR connect through Ethernet ports; sensors such as alarm devices connect to a PLC and then through a serial port; wireless-capable devices such as cameras and advertising screens connect directly over Wi-Fi.
The WR565's dual-SIM and failover mechanisms keep the link continuously online, automatically switching and reconnecting when the network is interrupted, ensuring that the POS checkout system never drops offline.
The Wavetel RMS platform enables remote management of devices across stores, timely firmware updates, monitoring of device operating status, and centralized configuration delivery.
IPsec VPN encrypted tunnels, together with mechanisms such as a firewall, provide comprehensive protection for network and data security.
POS payment packets are tagged with the highest-priority QoS label, while non-real-time services such as inventory and membership system synchronization can be scheduled for idle periods. HD video surveillance accounts for a high share of bandwidth. VLAN segmentation isolates the checkout POS subnet, the IoT device subnet, and the video surveillance subnet from one another, mitigating security risks at the network level.
