Wind Farm Remote Monitoring

Overview

Our client, an Indonesian wind power operation and maintenance service provider, manages over 200 onshore wind turbines across multiple sites. This case study details how the Wavetel WR565 industrial router establishes a stable communication link between turbine PLCs and the remote SCADA system, delivering a complete wireless networking solution tailored for remote wind farm environments

Challenges

Wind farms are typically located in high-wind regions such as coastal, mountainous, or rural areas. These remote sites often lack fiber-optic networks or reliable wired WAN access.

Although control cabinets provide basic protection, equipment inside the wind turbine tower base remains exposed to long-term mechanical vibration, temperature swings, and power fluctuations.

Each wind turbine control cabinet houses a PLC connected to various sensors. These PLCs require continuous connectivity to the central monitoring platform to interface local controllers with the remote SCADA system.

Transmitting turbine data across external or public networks introduces cybersecurity risks. All data must be encrypted to guarantee secure communication end-to-end.

Hundreds of turbines are widely dispersed across remote sites. Dispatching engineers for manual troubleshooting incurs heavy transportation, labor, and downtime expenses.

Solution

Industrial-Grade Hardware Design

Built with a wide-temperature industrial design and a metal enclosure, the device features high electromagnetic immunity, operating from -40°C to +75°C. It reliably withstands temperature fluctuations, mechanical vibration, and electrical noise inside tower-base control cabinets

Dual-SIM Redundancy & Failover

Each router is equipped with dual SIM cards from different carriers to monitor network link quality in real time. If the primary link degrades or drops, the device automatically fails over to the backup carrier link within seconds, ensuring uninterrupted turbine monitoring services.

Serial Interfaces & Modbus Support

WR565 connects to the wind turbine main PLC via RS485/RS232 and supports Modbus RTU/TCP protocols. Acting as a Modbus communication gateway, it enables local protocol conversion and data acquisition, facilitating seamless connectivity between field devices and the remote SCADA system.

IPsec VPN Secure Transmission

All turbine data is transmitted through encrypted IPsec VPN tunnels, building an end-to-end secure private network. This protects SCADA control commands, sensor readings, and operational data from public internet interception or tampering, meeting critical wind energy infrastructure security requirements.

Wavetel RMS

Through the Wavetel RMS platform, engineers can perform centralized monitoring, batch configuration, firmware updates, and remote troubleshooting across all wind turbine devices. This removes most reasons to send an engineer to site, significantly reducing field operation frequency and ongoing maintenance costs
